Point32 Celebrates Special Olympics Athlete James Day Keith as a ‘Healthy Hero’

April 4, 2025

At Tufts Health Plan, a Point32Health Company, the commitment to health and wellness extends far beyond traditional healthcare. Recognizing the powerful impact of Special Olympics Massachusetts, Tufts developed a sponsorship that not only provides health insurance support but also fosters a deep connection with Special Olympics athletes and its mission.

“We developed a sponsorship with SOMA and became their Official Health Insurance Partner; and we were trying to think of ways to support the health aspect of Special Olympics,” said Betty Russell, Senior Writer for Tufts Health Plan.

“We wanted to come up with something different than just an advertising campaign. We wanted to connect with the athletes, with the mission, and align it with our own plans.”

One of Tuft’s plans focuses on individuals who have Medicare or Medicaid, many of whom under 65 have a disability. Through this initiative, Tufts Health Plan sought to recognize Special Olympics athletes who exemplify leadership in health and wellness—leading to the creation of the Healthy Heroes Award.

This year’s recipient, James Day Keith, is a true embodiment of that mission. As a multi-sport Special Olympics MA athlete competing in basketball, track, soccer, skiing, and powerlifting, James demonstrates the importance of staying active. However, his impact extends far beyond his own training. As a new swim instructor for children, James instills confidence and a love for fitness in the next generation. His dedication is further demonstrated through his training for the Chicago Half Marathon, a testament to his perseverance and commitment to continue growing on his fitness journey.

Recognizing his leadership potential, James took his advocacy a step further by training to be a Fitness Captain with Special Olympics Massachusetts. This eight-week course provided him with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate fellow athletes, coaches, and the broader community to make healthier choices. As a Fitness Captain, James actively promotes key aspects of well-being, including hydration, nutrition, and consistent exercise routines.

“And so, it was a way for us to get to know some of the athletes, to recognize what they’re doing and to solidify our partnership in a way that will hopefully be meaningful for people,” Russell explained. “We wanted to honor an athlete who truly makes a difference.”

James was thrilled to receive the award at the 2025 Point32Health Polar Plunge, where he got a surprise presentation from Point32Health EVP/COO Katie Catlender and Boston Celtics' Derrick White—making the moment even more unforgettable!

Through its partnership with SOMA, Tufts Health Plan and Point32Health continue to foster a culture of wellness, ensuring that Special Olympics athletes have the support and recognition they deserve. James’ leadership, perseverance, and passion make him a great example of what it means to be a Healthy Hero.
